Solved: Unable to get online on my laptop
« on: October 12, 2007, 09:53:46 AM »
Posting from my desktop because I can't get online from my laptop since Wednesday night. The connection fails every time. I have a Belkin Wireless router and the desktop is wired and the laptop wireless. I have tried following through the Diagnose Problem route and it tells me that "The wireless Network key on this computer does not match the key settings on the wirelss router." I haven't changed anything, yet when I tried to go online yesterday I can't.

I've looked on the Setup Utility on the router but can't figure out what the Network key is. I thought it was under Wireless>Security (I'm using 64-bit WEP) but I've tried the one with the radio button on and that hasn't worked. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Hi Dave
Never thought of trying a new network key  ::) .............but it didn't work. I genertaed a key and input it on the laptop but it's still not being recognised. I think I vaguely knew that I would be better off with WPA but didn't know how to set it up. I might be better off trying to persevere with getting back online with WEP and then change to WPA though as it might add another complication. Any suggestions as to what I could try next please?

next i'd try reinstalling the network software on the laptop.

is it a PCMCIA card or internal and if so which software are you using ?

It's a Dell laptop with an internal card and the software is what came with the Belkin router.

I just had to check that. I've always thought that I was running the Belkin software on the laptop but I can't find any sign of it. It's about 2 1/2 years since I bought it and I can't remember much about setting it up now, :embarrassed

i'm not going on any logic here but you could try going to the belkin site and downloading the software, putting it on a usb drive or cd and installing it (or indeed if you have the original disk using that) or as it's built in wifi get the latest intel wifi drivers/application and installing that. You need to set it up again but it's worth a go.

Hi Dave

Success :thumbs although I don't really know why. I suddenly thought that it might be worth doing a System Restore back to when it was working on Wednesday night. I did that but it still wasn't working. So I viewed the wireless network and disconnected. I then realised that I had just tried changing the WEP security on the router to 128-bit WEP. So I typed the string into the laptop and it connected straightaway. I nearly fell off the chair!

Now that I'm back online I think I should look into improved security for the router. Thanks very much for your help (again!) - I really appreciate it.

Cheers
Clare
