Is it definitely connected? Has he tried to retrieve email? Is he running a firewall?

well it says orange connected at 1.1mbs

tried to get emails using outlook but it comes up as an error sayind somthing like "cannot find phonebook entry for this connection"  (im getting this info over the phone from a 10 year old)

firewall in use is sygate.

phone contact has been made with orange who got him to ping an ip address (presumably theirs) but it 100% failed. does this mean that the problem is with the ISP?

Not necessarily, the problem is likely to be his end. Does he have modem or router? Are the ADSL lights on? Has he got filters on all the telephones? Was the connection working until recently or is this a new connection?

Rather than you act as a go between, it might be better if you ask him to come along to join the forum and we can ask the questions directly and hopefully get it sorted for him.

speedtouch modem
all lights on correctly
all filters in place
connection 2 years old and was working ok

orange are running another test on the line...they need 3 hours to do it so hes gone to school ::)

is the problem likely to be ie6, if so is it worth trying firefox?

yet again you can see my vast knowlege of computers shining through! 8)

As he's now gone to school, we can't do anything till he gets home. Hopefully, by then Orange will have reported back on their findings. If it turns out not to be a technical fault with the line, then in the first instance, I'd get him to do a System Restore to yesterday, if it's only started today. Do you know if the system has adequate security? Sometimes Internet connections are broken when spyware is removed incorrectly. Some more information would be very useful if you can clueless please.

Good to have a 10 year old who's sufficiently security conscious that he's set Sygate to Block all. I can see you'll have a rival security expert in a few years time, Caroline :)
