PC doesn't always stay asleep when told!

Once I boot up my PC in the morning I only Sleep it during the day, performing a full Shut Down last thing in the evening.

Recently the computer has occasionally been waking up immediately after I've put it to sleep - almost as if the command hasn't quite been actioned properly.  I have Windows 8.1 (x64 bit) and I access the sleep process by right clicking the Windows icon at bottom left of screen, selecting Shut down or sign out followed by Sleep.  Nine times out of ten this works just as it should, but every so often I leave the room only to return and find that the PC has awoken of its own accord!

Is there any kind of troubleshooting fix I can try, or is this one of those things that I'll just have to learn to tolerate?  The computer is an HP Envy 700-311na which I bought new in September last year.

It's probably down to a device or program waking the PC prematurely. Tracking that down can be troublesome, but there is a tool that may help narrow the list of culprits:

Go to http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-8/fix-windows-8-1-will-sleep/ and follow the guide to generating a power report. Press [Win] + [Q] keys to open the Search and type cmd. Right-click the Command Prompt entry at the top of the list of results and choose Run as Administrator to access the all-important command prompt.

Let us know what you find from the HTML report that's generated. Hopefully we'll be able to identify the problem and suggest a suitable remedy.

Not really a remedy, but I have not used the built in Windows sleep feature since early Windows XP!
If I leave my PC for any amount of time during the day, all I ever do is switch the monitor off and the speakers. I found out years ago that you save very little on power consumption by using the sleep mode, and Windows has a nasty habit of freezing in sleep mode from time to time so that a restart is needed to get back to a working environment, also the problem you are having is common.
I can honestly say that I have never had a problem with the way I do things, and pressing two or in my case three buttons to get up and running again is all it takes, and I have never had a crash doing it this way!
Sleep mode is something that most people use, but honestly, there is no real benefit unless you are switching a whole office full of PC's to sleep!

I ran the report as you advised and captured the results to a Word document by copy'n'paste (I don't think I can attach the original HTML document).  However, I just don't seem to be able to activate the attachment mechanism on this forum, in spite of resaving the document in an earlier version of Word (.doc as opposed to .docx).  When I opened 'browse' and chose the relevant file, the entire pathway showed up in the box, rather than just the file itself, and when I went to preview it told me there was an error.  So I've copied and pasted the entire text on here, although the spaces and bold type aren't present in as in the original (sorry about that, but you were going to read it all anyway, so hopefully the manner in which it is presented is neither here nor there!) ...

PS.   If it helps, I use a brand new USB multi-port hub (always have done) which currently has inserted the receivers for both my wireless mouse and wireless keyboard.  The speakers are also powered from it.  Peripheral devices (two printers and a scanner) are all connected directly to the USB ports on the CPU.

Hi Willabong,

I don't actually use Sleep mode as a power saving device, rather as a means to be able to open things up quickly again without having to wait for the full booting up process!  I've always done things this way and it's only recently - and since I've had the new computer - that the unit occasionally 'wakes up' without being asked, and then that only happens immediately after it's been put to Sleep.
