Since 'outing' Avast, there have been no more problems - mail to and from BY flowing as it should.

It definately fits the changes made, because at one stage 1 PC made contact (whilst using webroot - which was on temp trial - and had just replaced Avast) -  and the other PC which was installed with Avast, and was not making contact.
The only mystery is why it became selective, and only had a problem with BY - all other ISP's/domains were as normal.

The e-mail scanner in Avast can be over sensitive to some e-mails, which it sees as suspicious, so it blocks them. You can correct this by entering the e-mail addresses in the exclusion list, but you have to do that with every rejected e-mail sent and recieved.....So switching to another virus checker is really the only truely workable option!

Its now been approx 1 week with AVG 2013 - and mail to and from blueyonder continues unabated :smiley :smiley.
