Unwanted images in e mail sent to friend
« on: June 27, 2009, 04:09:10 PM »
I sent some pics of my cat to a friend and was totally mortified when they e mailed back to say that in addition to these pics were some images of women in various states of undress.
Given that I do not own any such images or use such material and am totally against them in every way, how did these images end up in my e mail?!

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

The experts will no doubt have an answer, but while you wait, if it happened to me I would ensure I had the latest virus definitions and Spybot ones and run both a full virus check on my entire PC and also a Spybot search. Takes ages, but it's a nice day - go and do some gardening while it runs!

That is exactly what you should do! And then re-boot your computer, warn your friends, and send a test E-Mail to them, asking them to open it in their spam folder. If the Porn has gone then you should be OK.
If not, then you will have to do a "HiJackThis" log.

Spybot has been losing a lot of fans lately, so I would also perform scans with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) as well as your existing security package(s). On that note, what security tools do you currently have installed, and what version of Windows are you running?

Thanks, I'm on Windows XP running Commodo Pro and Spyware Blaster, plus Spybot S&D

"the images came  through  with  the  attachments  of  your cat as  scrolled  along  in  histories, perhaps   your anti virus  has  not worked properly?    but  they  definately  came  from  your email."

Above is how my friend described what happened.

Definitely run a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as well as Comodo - it's never enough to simply rely on real-time protection to keep you safe from harm.
